Section(4)The vocabs about Sky and Weather




Part One(Sky,Sun)
Sky
Afew white clouds drifted across the sky 

Blue Sky

Black Sky

Grey Sky
I like to see the sun grey skies make me feel depressed


Sky begin to clear
I think thr sky is begining to clear ,I can see afew blue patches among the clouds


Overcast Sky=cloudy Sky=Gloomy
Overcast day=Day with completely cloudly sky
A chilly overcast day




Night Sky
A huge fire at near by factory lit up the night Sky



Look up at the Sky 
There was not a cloud in the sky ,he lay on his back looking up at the cloudless sky
We looked up at a clear blue Sky,there was not a cloud  in a sight


The Sky brightens/darkens
The Sky suddenly darkened when the sun moved behind some black cloud

Snow falls from the Sky


NOTE
Sunny+sky=Having a lots of light from the sun

Cloudy+Sky=with a lots of clouds
The weather was cold and cloudy

Grey(Gray)+Sky=Grey in colour becoz there are dark clouds 

Overcast+Sky=Dark and completly covered with clouds
A chilly overcast day

Leaden+Sky=Grey and full of dark clouds
Snow fell from a leaden sky

Gloomy+Sky=Dark and cloudy in depressing way

Foggy+Sky=With thick low cloud that is difficult to see through 
A foogy day in Londen in Novemver


Misty+Sky=With light low cloud that is difficult to see through,u uese misty especially about places thatare next to water or in the mountains
A cold misty morning


Hazy+Sky=With air that looks cloudy ,becoz there  is smoke,dust ,mist
HAzy sunshine

Sun

The Sun (rises/comes up)
The Sun rises in the East and sets in the West.
I love to get up easly and watch the sun rise/come up



The Sun (sets/goes down)
We sat drinking beer by the sea,watching the sun goes down.

The Sun shines

The Sun comes out
After 10 minutes the rain stopped and the sun came out again

Avoid/Keep out  of the sun
Becareful when you are on holiday ,put on lots of sun cream and avoid the mid day sun


Sit in the sun and eating ice cream
I can not sit in the sun for very long,I have got very fair skin(light skin)

Dry sth in the sun
We dried our wet swimming costumes (clothes)in the sun

The Sun is in your eyes
I can not see a thing,the sun is in my eyes

I wear a baseball cap to shield to avoid myeyes from sun

We are having a great time here,soaking up the sun

During the hoildaus ,we lazed  around the sun all day long

I have got sunburn on the back of my neck,I must remember to wear a hat next time

Part Two(Moon,Star)

Moon

The Moon rises/comes up


I watched the full moon come up over the horizen ,It was enormous


The Moon appear/disappear
The moon disappeared behind the clouds and it was difficult to see

See by the light of the moon
We could see the lions,quite easily by the light of the moon

The Moon comes out
When the moon come out from behind the clouds,we were able to se the path clearly


The Moon shines
The moon was shining brightly I could read my book without a torch

A (Full/Half/New) Moon
During the Ramadan,Muslems do not eat and drink during day ,Ramadan lasts for about a month and ends when the new moon appears

A thin Crescent

The Americans landed on the moon in 1969
A clear night with a bright moon
It was raining and there was no moon


NOTE
Ask for the moon=Cry for the moon=to ask for sth that is difficult or impossible to obtain
There is no point in crying for the moon

Over the moon=Very happy
She is over the moon about her new job

Many moons ago=A long time ago
It all happened many moons ago

Last/verb form/=continue for a particular lenght of time 
Last for =until=through
The hot weather lasted for the whole month of june

Star
Look up at the stars
I lay on my back and looked up at the stars


The stars shines
It was clear night with no moon and the stars were shining brightly
It was a clear night and the stars were all out(there were shining)


Sleep (under/beneath) the stars
The night ,we camped out under the stars
It was  so hot that we slept outside beneath the stars


A bright star
Capella is one of the brightest stars in the sky

NOTE
If someone is a star they are famous in the world of entertainment or sport

You are a star=What a star=Said when u are very grateful or please becoz of what sb has done
Thanks u are a real star


Part Three(Rain)

Rain

It looks like rain,let's go inside

Rain start/stops
I ran for shelter as soon as the rain started  

Rain spreads 
Heavy rain is falling in Rome this morning and will spread later to the north of the country

The rain held off 
If rain/bad weather holds off,It does not start,although It looked as if it would
The rain held off until after the game
I hope the rain holds off until we get home ,I do not have a coat or an unbrella with me

Get caught in the rain 
I got cough in the rain and was soaked from head to toe

Pour with rain=(heavy/torrential/pouring)rain= a lots of rain
When we were in Wales it poured with rain from the moment we arrived 
It was pouring with rain=It was raining very hard,and she had a thin dress on
There will be heavy rain in most parts of the country
A heavy shower of rain 
You can not drive in the pouring rain
In this pouring rain....
Because It was pouring with rain......

Light rain
The light rain had stopped  


Rain beat against the window 
The rain beats against my bedroom window all night and kept me awake


The first drops of rain fell


Heavy /Torrential /light...+Rain  (Adjective)
The weather forcast says we are in for more heavy rain  tommorrow
I did not need my unbrella as the rain was very light
I had to drive very slowly through the torrential rain

I am sure ,I felt a few drops of rains on my face just now

Our barbecue was ruined by a heavy shower of rain

We could not hear ourselves talking for the sound of rain on the roof of the car

There was hardly a break in rain all day ,It never really stopped once

NOTE
Break in =to intrrupt sb when they are speaking 
I do not want to break in on his telephone conversation.

Take shelter from the rain
We took shelter from the rain in a nearby cafe


Get (soaking) wet in the rain
We got soaking wet in the rain on the way of home


Bring it in out of the rain
Should not we bring the washing in out of the rain

It was a miserable day,It poured with rain all afternoon


NOTE 

It looks like rain to me=I think It is going to rain

I hope the rain lets up for the weekend finally=Stops 

This rain looks as if it is has set in for the rest of day=Started and will continue

The rain is expected to last all weekend=Will continue

It was pouring  with rain =It was pouring =the rain was very heavy

It was bucketing with rain=It was bucketing =the rain was  very heavy


Part Four(Thunder,Lightning,Cloud)

Thunder and Lightning



Be struck by lightning
Tom was strucking by lightning while playing golf
Can lightning ever strike twice in the same place?


A flash/bolt of lightning

Lightning flashes 
During the storm ,lightning flashed across the sky

A clap of thunder
There was a sudden flash of lightning followed by a loud clap of thunder

NOTE
You can also say a thunder clap as well as a clap of thunder
Notice from the exercise that lightning flashes across the sky

Struck=past tense of strike =hit and harm=If lightning strikes sth ,It hits and damage it
The temple burned down after it was struck by lightning

A flash of lightning 
At that moment ,a flash of lightning lit the horizen

Bolt of lightning
A few bolts of lightning and clouds of smoke later,Turbo was born

Clap=a sudden loud noise
Some 10 seconds,we heard the clap of thunder


Cloud

Cloud over the (sun/moon/sky)


Clouds floats across the sky
It was a fine day when we got there,only afew clouds were floating across the sky

Cloud lift

A plane breaks through the clouds
A few minutes after take off our plane broke through the clouds into bright sunlight

Whithe/Dark  cloud
Dark clouds suddenly covered the sun and I had to put a jumper on
It was a beautiful summer 's day with just afew fluffy white clouds in the sky

Rain/Storm cloud
Black storm clouds were gathering on the horizen,so we left the bech  and went back to our hotel before the rain started

Thick cloud =heavy/thick/dense  cloud
We could not see the top of mount Everest,It was covered in thick cloud
Heavy clouds had gathered over the summit of Mont Blanc

Low cloud=light/high   cloud
Visibility at the airport was poor becoz of the low cloud and heavy rain

NOTE
The whole country was covered in a blanket of cloud 

There were a few breaks in the cloud later in the day ,so we got some  sunshine

A cloud of (dust/smoke/gas)
A cloud of steam rose into the air

He left the company under a cloud of suspision.


Part Five(Snow,Ice)

Snow

Snow falls
Snow was falling heavily as we entered the village 
The snow has been falling steadly all day ,It is now about 10 cms deep


Snow drifts(very slowly)=If snow/sand drifts ,the wind blows it into large pile
Snow had drifted against garage door overnight and I could not push it open




Snow melts 
I do not think the snow will lie on the streets for very long ,It is already strating to melt

Clear snow(from a path)
It took me over in an hour to clear the snow from my front door to the street

Deep snow 
We had to struggle through deep snow to get here ,It was knee-deep in places 
Roads blocked by deep snow

Heavy snow 
Many villages have been cut off by heavy snow ,all main roads are closed 

Melting snow
The melting snow has caused severe flooding in the area

A blanket of snow
Fresh snow fell during the night ,the ground was covered in a thick blanket of snow when we got up

A fall of snow 
The day was cold with frequent falls of snow which only lasted a few minutes

A flake of snow (Snowflake)=small pices of snow
A few flakes of snow fell ,but It never  really started to snow properly

Ice

Ice forms


Ice melts
The sun came out and melted the ice on the pavements

As soon as I stood on the thin ice ,it strated to crack ,I got off it very quickly


Scrape ice off your car=If u scrape sth ,u get rid of it or cancel it=remove sth from surface
Ice and formed on the windscreen of my car overnight,I had to scrape it off before I could drive to work


Be covered with ice
The lake is usually covered with thick ice for most of jan and feb

Skate on ice
Do u think the ice on the pond is now thick enough to skate on it?


Skid on ice
The car skidded as she turn onto the high way
The bus skidded off the road and into a ditch
My friend's car skidded on some black ice and hit a tree



Slip on ice
My mother broke her arm when she slipped on some ice and fell

Part Six(Wind,Fog)

Wind


The wind blows 
The wind blew from the northest
The wind suddenly changed direction and started to blow from the north

The wind changes 

The wind rises/gets up=the wind gets up/picks=blow more strongly
We did not reach the top of the mountain,we decided to turn back when the wind started to rise/get up

The wind drops/dies down  =blows less strongly
I think we should wait till the wind drops/dies down  before we try to put up the tent

The wind Whistles through trees=to make loud noise
You could hear the wind whistling through the small gaps in the windows

Cycle/Walk/Sail  into the wind
The captain said that the ferry would be thirty minutes late becoz it was sailing into a very strong wind.

Shelter from/out of  the wind
I am getting cold ,Let's shelter from the wind in that shop doorway over here 

Strong/high  winds

A light wind

Icy/cold/bitter  winds

NOTE
The flags on top of the castle fluttered gently in the light wind

Last night high winds caused serious  serious damage to our roof

The wind was so strong,It almost  blew me off my feet

The icy wind cut right through me,I was absolutely freezing when I got home.

The wind was getting up and it was becoming cloudy

we will wait till the wind drops before we put the tent up

Sail=to travel in a boat/ship 

It was absolutely still.there was not a breath of wind=clean air outside

A strong gust of wind blew my hat off my head.


Fog


Fog rolls in
It was lovely and sunny when we arrived at the beach ,but when the fog rolled in from the sea,we had to go home ,It got so cold very quickly!

W e get lost in the thick fog
We were hopelessly lost in thick fog ,we stopped at a petrol station to ask where we were,,they must have thought we were mad!

Fog lifts/clears=disappeard
The fog is begining to lift/clear ,so our plane should be able to take off soon

NOTE
A blanket of fog covered the field

My mind was in a fog=confused mind


when sth roll,It moves along surface
Roll in=to happen or arrive in large numbers or quantities 

As the result of our appeal ,the money come rolling in

If (Mist/Clouds/fog) roll in=they begin to cover an area of the sky or land
Fog rolled in from the sea
